Gem ownership has always been tied to individual accounts. That works fine for solo maintainers, but breaks down for teams: transfers are manual and error-prone, there's no shared view of who has access to what, and if a maintainer goes quiet, recovering control is painful.
Organizations gives teams a proper home on RubyGems.org. Shared gem ownership, member management, and access control as a group rather than a patchwork of individual accounts.
We're currently validating this with a private beta group before opening it up to everyone.
